Neck Pain

Neck pain can affect sleep, work, driving and everyday movement. It may be felt across the neck and shoulders or towards the back of the head.

What causes neck pain?

Muscles, discs and the small joints in the neck can contribute. Age-related changes on a scan are common and do not always explain pain. Most neck pain is not caused by a dangerous condition.

When might I need an assessment?

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, is significantly affecting your life, or is accompanied by pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in an arm.

Problems with hand coordination, balance or walking need prompt medical assessment because they can sometimes indicate pressure on the spinal cord.

What treatments may help?

Treatment often begins with advice, movement, exercise, physiotherapy and suitable pain relief. Where a particular source of pain is suspected, an injection or diagnostic procedure may sometimes help guide care. Surgery is usually considered for a specific nerve or spinal cord problem, rather than ordinary neck pain alone.
